However, conventional endodontic sealers used for filling the root canal space have two primary limitations: shrinkage, leading to detachment of filling materials from the canal walls, and solubility, causing "washing-out" of sealers. Both shrinkage and washing-out can create gaps inside and between the filling material and canal walls, promoting microbial colonization and reinfection, ultimately resulting in treatment failure. In fact, substandard root canal fillings are responsible for 65% of endodontic failures.
